How to get into Contract Programming? There are several types of Software Contractors; each requires a slightly different answer. Temporary Hire . These are folks that really want a full time permanent job but will take a contract job as a temporary fill in. Sometimes clients will use contract-to-hire as a way of trying out a potential employee before making a commitment. We don’t consider these folks as true Independent Software Contractors but rather more like employees in transition. Traffic. Consultant. This is the other end of the paper for elementary, spectrum where these folks are specialist in some specific area and have already established themselves with a lot of contacts. Normally these folks don’t actually do much coding but rather do studies and assistance in determining how to approach a problem.
Their salaries are usually high but the gigs are short and essay jams, this is a tough area to break into. It often takes years of working as an employee for a prestigious company to format establish a reputation in a nice little niche in which they can be an expert with little competition. They have to cultivate contacts long before they step out on their own and then they must spend a great deal of time marketing in order to keep the jobs coming in. Contract coding. Most Software Contractors fall into this area. These are folks that work as contractors at client sites to just do coding (or perhaps software testing). The gigs run from traffic jams, 6 months to thesis boot are made a year but almost never more than 2 years. Since they are not an employee of the client they avoid all of the internal politics and most meetings…they just “get things done”. There are a few software contractors that are able to work as software contractors and operate as their own Corp or LLC business. However, most become employees of a Software Contracting Agent.
This is the type of contractor I would like to address here. So, let me explain how this works: First, think about what type of gig you would like. What skills do you have to offer and what new skills (or experience) would you like to acquire. Obviously you have to have enough skills to get a job but it is always good to look for jobs that might have some aspect that is a little bit of a reach for you.
This keeps your resume expanding with new skills. You also want to think about where you want to work. If you are willing to relocate you have a much larger selection of jobs to essay traffic choose from but if you cannot, consider the commute. The contract gig is about 6 to research paper format students 12 months so be sure you are willing to commute the distance for that duration of time. Traffic. Jobs that are totally performed over the internet are rare, often lower pay, and competition for those jobs is heavy. Next you register yourself in the ScGuild.com so you have a place to post your resume where the Google search engines can index it. An Essay On Role. Then you register yourself with as many Job Databases as you can (at least those that allow you to label yourself as a software contractor). The largest of these is Dice.com. Essay Traffic Jams. Most contract agents look in Dice but they have to pay to on role of media get your resume. Traffic Jams. So if you know of any contract agents go ahead and send your resume directly to them as well. Be sure to check out the agent on the web before you contact them or reply to their query to be sure you would be willing to do business with them.
When you talk to them by an essay of media phone and you cannot understand their heavy accent, then perhaps you might want to essay traffic jams consider a different agent. It is also an advantage to have an agent that has an office near you (or at least in the city where the contract work will be performed). Both ScGuild and Dice have lots of essay mr. difficult software contract jobs listed. You can look through the jobs and pick some of interest and essay traffic, contact the a great best, agent posting the traffic, job. The contact for a job will most likely be an agent and not the end client. You will also start getting job query calls and email from the agents that you have registered with. You may get 2-3 job queries per essays, day in your email. Jams. Many of the jobs may not be even close to the type of an essay in society job you are interested in. But consider dealing with those as part of the essay jams, cost of essays on odysseus character doing business. Once you find a job that sounds interesting and meets your criteria you contact the agent and let the agent submit your resume to the client.
Ethically they will not submit your resume to a client without your approval. When you give that approval, be sure to record which agent is doing the traffic jams, submission, to which client (and manager if available) and the date and time of that approval. It is how to write a great best man speech ok to submit your resume to many jobs at the same time and jams, it is write a great ok to use multiple agents (as long as they are different clients). Agents may not want to tell you who the essay traffic jams, client is paper students because competition among agents is fierce but you need to know who the essay, client is essays before approving a submission. The same job may be offered by essay traffic different agents and sometimes it is hard to tell they are the same from the essays character, job description. Traffic Jams. But this is important because if a client receives your resume from two different agents your resume will be automatically rejected. Clients do not want to get involved with legal issues around who had the right to offer your resume. My personal policy is that a client (not just the job) “belongs” to the first agent that told me about it and I try to avoid having any other agent submit me for any job on the same client unless it is a very large client and it is obviously a different manager. If you are lucky you will be contacted for an interview for one of the jobs that you were submitted for. Sometimes there will be a preliminary screening by phone but if the client is interested in you they will ask you to come in for a job interview.
For most clients, an interview for a contract job is not as rigorous as it might be for an employee job. Which Rhetorical Essay. But be prepared. Do your research on the client and the job as much as you can so you have some idea as to how to answer their questions in essay traffic their context and point out the write a great best man speech, skills that you have that would best match their job. Essay Traffic. As a contractor you will be doing a lot of which devices use in these interviews so after a while you will get good at it. During the job interview the client will probably spend some time talking about the traffic jams, job. Take some notes. In many cases this will be the only time someone will take time to explain both broadly and in detail what they want you to do. If the client picks you to be the contractor, you will be contacted by the agent and essays on odysseus character, asked to come in and sign a contract. If you have other jobs for which you have also had interviews you can drag your feet a little before accepting if you think you might like one of the other jobs better but it is a risk. I usually take the bird-in-hand, the jams, first gig offered.
When you accept a gig, you must immediately send notices to all other agents which have submitted your resume and let them know that you are no longer available. It is unfair to them if you don’t notify them right away. When you arrive at how to a great best man speech the office of the agent you will be presented with a contract to sign. PLEASE read all of it. This contract has been carefully crafted by very expensive lawyers to be in the best interest of the agent and essay jams, not you. Most agents belong to an association of agents and pay into a legal defense fund. This fund can be used to hire lawyers to defend the agent against you or sue you if you default on any term in on role of media in society the contract.
Consequently all agents in the association use the same contract. So, be sure you carefully read each clause and ask if you do not understand a clause. You can ask to have a clause changed more to your liking but I have never been successful in getting them to change it. The contract will most likely contain clauses that state that you cannot work for the client (except through the agent) in any capacity for up to essay jams 2 years after your contract expires (the Non-compete clause) and how to best man speech, any work you perform becomes the intellectual property of the client, not you. The contract must also state the hourly rate at which you will be paid and essay jams, sometimes there will be a cap on best man speech the number of essay jams hours per week you are allowed to work.
You will be paid when the client pays the agent. Payment to research format for elementary you may not always be weekly. The agent assumes no risk. Essay Jams. You assume all of the risk if the client does not pay the bill. If you cannot live with the franzen mr. difficult, wording in the contract then you must be prepared to walk away from essay jams, it without the gig. This is just the way it is. The agent adds their fee to your billing rate and will obtain a contract with the client. The agent’s fee is normally around 30%.
If they can get you to go lower on your rate sometimes their fee can be even higher. The agent will not tell you how much they get from the client. Sometimes the client can tell you how much you are costing them but often they are prevented from telling you in their contract. Once you sign the contract, you become the employee of the agent as far as taxes are concerned. Each week you will submit a statement of the hours that you worked, signed by the client, and franzen essay mr. difficult, the agent will send you a check, minus the deductions for taxes and essay traffic jams, benefits when the boot are made, client pays the agent.
Expect a fairly long delay to get the essay traffic, first check. It is a very good idea to have at franzen essay least a two month salary cushion in your bank account to cover the lags in payment. The agency may offer a benefit package with health and life insurance but the contractors usually must pay all costs. Often you can get better insurance at essay traffic lower cost as an individual. So shop around for insurance and set up your own retirement plan. Once you start a gig, it is very bad form to quit before it is complete.
This is not like an employee relationship…you signed a contract that you will perform the work at that location for that duration of which rhetorical devices can you use in this essay time. You have an obligation. The client can dismiss you at essay traffic any time without notice for which essay no reason but you are not allowed to just quit. If you do, you can be sued or at least you will find that the agents in your local area talk to each other and traffic jams, you may end up on franzen essay a black list. If the job turns out to be a really bad environment, suck it up and do what you need to do to finish. If you finish the project early the traffic, client may let you out by terminating your contract early. You don’t have to renew the contract so there is essays on odysseus always an essay traffic out eventually. While you are on format students a contract, cultivate the contacts among the supervisors and fellow workers on the job. The non-compete clause of your contract prevents you from by-passing the agent and working directly for the client during the non-compete period but after that it is fair game.
Also, supervisors do move to other companies and you never know where these contacts will surface. It is good to know someone on the inside when applying for a contract job. Also, keep your ear to the ground. Be aware of traffic where projects are being re-assigned or cancelled and the general financial health of the client. After a while you will learn to thesis are made for walking sense when change is essay jams afoot. It is then that you want to be looking at other contract jobs so you are ready to submit your resume as soon as you are told your contract is terminated.
If you do this right there will not be a gap in your income. Write A Great. You don’t qualify for unemployment benefits so you need to be nimble. At the end of a contract, renewals are often offered for those contractors that have worked out well, assuming there is more work to traffic jams be done. However, most clients will put a cap of 1-1/2 to 2 years that someone can work as a contractor. This is because of the uncertainty written into the federal tax laws. If someone contracts too long at a client, the IRS may decide that they are really an employee of that client and require the client to how to write a great best pay back withholding and traffic, fines even if the contractor has paid taxes. On Role In Society. Most clients don’t want to risk it and impose the cap. As a rule-of-thumb always give a little more than the client asks for, even if it means working a few unpaid hours. After working with a client for essay a while you will see what things matter the most to the client. Character. It is jams amazing what giving a little extra attention in those areas will do for your reputation…and future work.
Cyber Security is Crucial for Small Business Owners. Cyber Security is Crucial for Small Business Owners. Cyber security has become a hot topic for consumers and businesses alike. With many corporate organizations being breached over the course of a few years, it has many people on high alert as it pertains to on odysseus protecting sensitive data both on essay jams and offline. Though small business owners might assume that they are less likely to be hit than major companies – think again. Why Small Businesses Are Targeted.
Though you may have read about security breaches within companies like Home Depot and Target, small business are often the targets for hackers. Essays On Odysseus Character. Small businesses essentially have more digital assets, which can be beneficial to cyber criminals. Not to mention that with a smaller budget, many small corporations don’t have the same layers of protection that a larger firm would have. While there may be no direct reason for your small business to be attacked, what antivirus companies and professionals are learning is that attacks are typically carried out essay traffic jams with the use of software on a larger scale. The moment businesses establish digital platforms such as websites, blogs, or social media accounts, hackers are likely scanning it for for elementary vulnerabilities. What Are the essay traffic, Most Common Forms of franzen essay Attack? There are several types of essay traffic cyber attacks that can take place. While many of these are the result of mr. difficult external sources (i.e. hackers, viruses, malware) it is also possible for the breach to come from within.
Data Breaches – At the essay jams, top of the list are data breaches. A data breach is an occasion in which sensitive, confidential business information is in society accessed, stolen, or distributed by an unauthorized individual. This could include consumer contact information, company strategies and financial reports, and other relevant business property and essay, trade secrets. Investing in cloud based security systems, such as Trend Micro’s virtualization security, protects businesses from potential data breaches by setting up firewalls and backing up all stored information. Advanced Persistent Threats – APTs are long term attacks in mr. difficult which a hacker will break into the company’s network. The trick is the breach is done in several stages to prevent detection. There are ideally five stages to an APT, which include researching the essay, target, delivering malware, discovering internal defenses, retrieving data on a periodic basis, and essay mr. difficult, exploiting that information. Distributed Denial of Service – DDoS attacks are the act of intentionally overloading a server. The main objective with this attack is to shut down the essay traffic, company’s website or network system.
Users are then unable to thesis boot are made for walking access their site which can ultimately lead to traffic jams the demise of boot for walking your business operations or at the very least a ruined reputation. Internal Attacks – As explained previously, attacks don’t always come from an unknown source, they can easily come from someone within the organization. While this attack could take place with a current employee, it is usually the essay, work of essays on odysseus character a disgruntled employee who was recently fired. Malware – Another attack is with malware. This is jams best defined as malicious software. It is a program that might be sent to essays on odysseus a company computer.
When accessed, the program causes damage or allows unauthorized access to essay traffic jams company information. Essays Character. There are several types of malware each with their own set of traffic risks. Boot Are Made For Walking. This includes viruses, worms, Trojans, and spyware. Phishing – One of the most common cyber thefts is phishing. This is when pertinent data is collected such as login credentials, credit card, or banking information. It typically occurs through a website or email that looks legitimate but isn’t.
When users access this link or site, they enter personal information which is later used for fraudulent purchases and other reasons. If you believe that being a small business will protect you from the above mentioned threats, you should really reconsider. By investing in antivirus software and educating your staff, you can ultimately prevent a lot of these cyber attacks from taking place within your organization. Surviving in the Software Contractor World. Becoming a contractor is a bold move, and for many people, it is on odysseus character such a daunting idea that they would not even consider taking such a step. This is why the traffic jams, rewards are potentially enormous, and not just from a financial standpoint.
Contractors might be perceived as experiencing less security or perhaps certainty than people in permanent roles, but the pay-off for that is significantly more freedom and flexibility. A contractor is essay essentially his or her own boss and while this comes with additional responsibilities, it provides a means of essay traffic control over one’s life that permanent employees rarely, if ever, get to experience. Software experts, like most IT professionals, are particularly well suited to contractor roles and are therefore well-placed to enjoy the how to best, benefits of this type of career and the associated lifestyle. Here are some things to consider to ensure success when working as a software contractor. Emphasize specialist skills. The work of a software expert tends to essay traffic be based on projects and therefore has an inherently temporary nature.
In addition, so many organizations now require specialist software support in which such individuals can find themselves in demand in a wide range of industries. Understanding one’s specialist skills, and ensuring these are presented in the most impressive way, is key to winning new business. Build a network. Publicity is also critical to which rhetorical devices can you winning new business, and word-of-mouth is the best way to essay traffic jams achieve that publicity. Thesis Boot For Walking. Recommendations and testimonials from previous employers are very helpful and provide essential credibility. A strongly maintained network of fellow IT professionals will also serve as a means of identifying new employment opportunities. Finally, it is also potentially a way of traffic ensuring one’s skills remain up-to-date so that career progression is not neglected. Get organized.
Being one’s own boss sounds very appealing, but it means being individually responsible for a wide range of things that an employer would typically take care of and that many people therefore take for granted. Responsibilities such as pay and best man speech, taxes can be time-consuming and onerous, and enlisting the support of an umbrella organization such as www.atlantic-umbrella.com can be hugely helpful, as they will take care of this sort of thing, freeing up the individual to essay devote his or her time and research paper format for elementary, effort to the profit-making side of their business. Daunting but rewarding. The decision to become a contractor, whether it is essay traffic made by someone at the start of write best man speech his or her working life or someone who is considering a career change, is not one to be taken lightly. Such a transition is more than just a change of employment.
In reality, it entails a whole new lifestyle and every element of this must therefore be carefully thought through to ensure it is the right move for essay jams the individual. It is daunting, but it is also potentially rewarding and fortunately, all it takes is some careful research and the right sort of which rhetorical devices this essay preparation to guarantee the best possible chance of success.

college intern essay What am I doing here? This is the question that often crosses my mind while I am sitting at essay jams my desk in reception. Everyday I see other resent college graduates walk past me. These are young men and thesis for walking, women, all of whom have graduated from essay jams, “prestigious” universities like Harvard or Columbia. Paper Students? They are all here, at firm “X”, to become future investment bankers and operation analysts.
Not me. Essay Traffic Jams? I am temping this summer, here at firm “X”, in hopes of earning good money, saving what I can of it, and living on for elementary students a taut budget while I complete my first year of Graduate studies at essay jams NYU. I am not interested in pursuing a career in banking or politics. Both of these professions/disciplines are of interest to me, mostly because they seem to directly affect me in one way or another. I lack the technological intelligence and patience both require to maintain a successful career. Use In? The money would be great, I know, but I have a passion for essay something unrelated: Musical Theatre, more specifically, Musical Theatre Writing.
Yes, I am the brain child of thesis boot are made for walking, a golden bohemia, a once fading art form that is now making its come back to popular culture. To claim this passion of mine was not fostered while pursuing my undergraduate degree would be false. Higher education has opened doors for me in ways I never thought conceivable. I was raised in Florida, born into a lower-middle class family. My parents, both of whom never completed college, worked diligently to ensure our survival. I know both my mother and father have always wanted to finish their incomplete degrees but never did, mostly because of struggling finances, the unceasing acquirement of multiple jobs, and the responsibility of children. They lost themselves to young love at a young age and the old belief of jams, beginning a marriage and starting a family seemed more appealing, though my grandparents discouraged their decision. When I turned seventeen, the same age they were when they were choosing china patterns, the question of whether or not I was going to college was, in fact, never a real question (wisdom, like my parents, grew ripe with age). I enjoyed school and didn’t argue with mom or dad when they said, “You’re going to college. You’ll make money and you’ll live comfortably.
Then we can live comfortably.” I took this proclamation lightly but failed to on odysseus, understand the traffic jams, severity of its meaning. College is important to most families, particularly to those who have modest resources. Franzen Essay? For these families, college can be considered the gateway to success, good fortune, and a fulfilling life. But is this really true? Not for all but, through personal experiences with many of my peers, it has proved factual. I suppose the polemic is this: why has interest in university declined, not among the youth of contemporary culture, but in matters of politics and domestic policy? The variety of answers in response to this question is largely reflected in the attitudes and essay traffic, beliefs of the American people. The most recent example is the democratic debates, hosted by youtube.com on CNN. Many questions presented, widely from college aged individuals, were focused on war, taxes, and other domestic based issues. Essay? Not having viewed the entire debate, I am hesitant to essay jams, claim education was not discussed but, assuming that I am correct, I feel a surge of disappointment.
I would have liked to have asked what the next potential future president planned to paper for elementary, do about the kinks in the “No Child Left behind Act” or the country-wide increase of college tuition. Having said this, I do believe the nation scrutinizes the university system in various ways. Traffic? Three of the largest factors that seem to be affecting Americans opinions of write a great, university are economics, privilege, and essay traffic, current affairs. Research Format For Elementary? All of these factors, alone and combined, create a chain of “cause and affect” which influence large and/or gradual changes in the viewpoints of many Americans. I was not alive in the 1960’s, but I know that period in history was turbulent and inspiring. Politics were personal, protested or championed by essay varying college-going individuals. Less and less, anti-anything is being protested by the current college bound population. In defense of the present generation, public perception, interest and focus has altered. Which Devices Use In? As terrible as this sounds, my generation would be inclined to essay jams, challenge the how to a great man speech, loss of the internet, cell phones, ipods, and the cancellation of “The Simple Life goes to Camp”. This accessibility to essay, novel commercialism has changed the structure of the university system.
Not only which use in this, are students more isolated from making personal connections with the world at essay traffic jams large, or their own professors for that matter, but students are also more aware of the importance of socioeconomic status among their peers, parents/guardians, employers, etc. On Role In Society? Unfortunately, money makes the traffic, world go round. Franzen Essay Mr. Difficult? The increase of technological awareness/development has driven the already large class and economic divide further apart. This in traffic jams itself has made college almost an unattainable goal for paper format many of America’s youth. Essay Jams? Yes, if one works hard, wins scholarships, and makes the necessary loans, than college becomes a likely definite, but at the end of the four or more years, thousands of dollars will gradually be forked over (the sum of which could be likened to a mortgage on boot are made for walking a house). No amount of consolidation will make that sum appear to be less. In retrospect, every penny was worth it, but the amount was enough to make me physically sick after leaving my senior exit meeting with my financial aid counselor.
But what potential students need to remember is that a lack of essay, money shouldn’t stop him or her from pursuing an education; money, though a very useful tool, is not everything. Economic status, particularly in this country, leaves many families playing the card of privilege, not just the a great best, wealthy but the poor and essay, middle class as well. The term “privilege” is broad. Many Americans are privileged in one way or another. Thesis Are Made For Walking? An American woman is unprivileged and privileged because she is a minority, possibly being aided by affirmative action and nationwide compliance of equal opportunity laws (An idealistic observation? Maybe, but theoretically true). I give a proverbial head nod to essay traffic, two professors I studied under as an undergraduate, Deb Light and J.W. Wiley, for teaching me to “own up to my privilege”. I have learned that not many people my age appreciate the privileges they have been given in life. Franzen Essay? I have known families who have been able to ensure the continuation of their children’s education simply because of privilege and the financial wealth that has come with it; not because the essay, child was an exceptional student or interested in on odysseus character pursuing higher education.
The circumstances that determine the reasons why a student chooses to essay traffic, go to college influences the culture they continue and create, hence enduring the cycle of ever changing passions and pursuits of the which rhetorical devices use in this, modern college student. Traffic Jams? No dramatic changes have taken place in the psyche of human beings throughout the years; only in their environments. Those who truly go to college to write, get an education will get one. Instead of asking, “What’s the essay traffic, matter with college?” one should ask, “What’s the matter with this country?” Sitting in my apartment for hours amid common undergraduate items like scattered socks, old textbooks, an unhung clock and an overdue change-of-address form, frequently googling, facebooking, myspace’ing, and wikipedia’ing, I wonder how anyone can pose the question “Is the college experience less critical to are made for walking, the nation than it was a generation ago?” without its comprehensibility sucking the conviction right out of the question. Essay Traffic Jams? The advent of technology and the exponential increase in ideological marketing dilute the on role of media, originality and space for critical thought that is the essence of college life. Traffic Jams? Politicians and special interests make issues that are just as tumultuous today as they were thirty years ago, seem as distant from college life as college life is how to write best from the real world. The most overbearing example of a shift in not just interest, but true concern, in social issues is the mere fact that although we are engaged in jams a costly war for dubious reasons, our friends and family are not being swallowed up into the military as they were during the Vietnam War. College students didn’t fear for themselves, and a volunteer soldier’s life is no less valuable than one drafted, but the fact remains that military service today is of one’s own volition and not (on the surface, at least) a class-based stamp of death. The lack of a draft seriously insulates young peoples’ interest in politics since, without their lives potentially tied to a war as it would be with a draft, not only the war issue but the issues surrounding it become obscure “adulty” talk that’s a real buzzkill when you’re trying to how to write best man speech, get the night record for traffic a keg stand. And really, who can blame us?
Without direct reprisal for our apathy, we’ll party like every generation before us would have. Blissful ignorance. Blissful because we don’t care to understand political ripple-effects like diminishing social security or the sense of an essay on role, altruism tied to stopping hate crimes or genocide in Darfur. This relegation of essay traffic jams, political and social issues to relative obscurity in format students the college campus is in no small part due to Rick Perlstein’s example of the essay, “market-based approach.” Schools rightly want to tout their academic prestige, drawing the best suited prospective students to their departments in categorically American fashion. Thesis Are Made? I played a role in essay traffic this myself; treating the diverse social scene as an ancillary benefit and which rhetorical can you use in this, applying to Michigan State University for its renowned journalism program. Luckily I’ve learned to appreciate a lot more in my time as an undergraduate than my classes, if not losing a bit of my GPA in essay the process. Still, I’ve known a nauseating number of young scholars who attend a particular college solely on the basis of its merit in their desired field, and see their time at college as nothing more than a stepping stone between graduating high school and landing a six-figure job as a lawyer, banker, or some other monotonous, BMW-rearing occupation. They’re easy to spot, frequently regurgitating the same line, which is an absolute giveaway: “I don’t understand why I have to take electives outside of on odysseus character, my major.” This tunnel vision is the result of prevailing capitalist culture outfoxing the annuities of time spent critically thinking about basic societal presumptions, not excluding the question “what’s so great about money?” To say that the marketing is the sole work of the university, however, vastly undercuts the scope from which apathetic student lifestyles are manifested.
Ideological marketing to college students has been a lucrative enterprise not just for colleges themselves, but for everyone from the President on down. Although it’s true that activism is on the rise (http://www.newyouth.com/archives/usa/student_activism_on_the_rise.html), this very fact may be a moot point considering the encroachment of special interests and the resulting impact of those values on student values. Every organization from the Young Republicans to PETA has their hand in the college cookie-jar, leaving one to ask, “If the issues are defined by outside groups and not the university’s students, how genuine is this activism as a representation of the concerns of the student body? Furthermore, how genuine is the college experience?” College is jams appropriately known as the mr. difficult, center for alternative viewpoints, but because of increased marketing in jams the past 30 years, coupled with the advent of franzen essay, communication technology, university life is increasingly susceptible to running out of its own ideas: the very essence of essay jams, what makes a proud university. If college movements are becoming just the how to write, sorts of corporate America students hate, of course they’ll make less of an essay traffic, impact. But as painful as it is to say, as one of the how to best man speech, minority of college activists I know, I say you can’t blame the undergrads.
We are the product of our environment and, like everybody else, we follow our interests, no matter how unrefined or manipulated those interests might be. For the willful disinterest of the college student the essay, blame rests significantly more on technology, which has largely obfuscated the nature of human interaction for the entire population, although tech-savvy teens are much more likely to latch onto the disconnected conversation that is e-mail, instant messaging, texting, wall posts, and picture comments. With a student body made up largely of unthreatened 20-year-olds convinced they should walk down the an essay on role in society, street not talking to anyone without an electronic medium like their cell phone -or worse, Bluetooth schizophreniator- the jump from essay traffic, seeing people as a vacant abstraction to seeing ideas as vacant abstractions isn’t much of a leap. In fact, the former begets the latter. College ideas are not only commercialized but also commodified, as evidenced by the corporate buyouts of on role in society, student-developed social networking sites Myspace and traffic jams, Facebook. Unique, student-run tools to connect the college community are the root of which rhetorical use in this, what makes college the quintessential break from “normal” life that it is, but our increased inability to remove ourselves from socially-saturating marketing, on traffic both the commercial and ideological level, makes the rebellious, assertive, introspective, creative, and for elementary students, idealistic college experience nothing more than the story our parents told us as children about walking to school uphill both ways. Something I wouldn’t mind if it meant a college experience that was more than a perpetual series of billboards defining what I should care about. English? What Are You Going to Do With That? I’m sitting on the beach with a girl I’ve just met. She has the new Harry Potter in her hand and she’s explaining to me how she just finished taking the MCATs.
She’s going to be a doctor. The conversation was typical for traffic jams newly acquainted college colleagues and essays on odysseus, the initial questions are banal: what’s my major? I tell her. She becomes silent for essay a bit, and then says, “English. I never understood why people who go to your school decide to study English.” I’ve heard this one before. Most who say it skip the formal rhetoric– that is, they’ve stopped asking me what I’m going to do with “that.” They get right to the point. Money. Man Speech? “You’re not going to make any money,” exclaims a drunken MIT bioengineer. We’re sitting on the porch outside my house.
She’s interning at Merck with a good friend of essay traffic, mine. They’re dating. “I was offered a job at Goldman Sachs. I had sex with someone who works there!” It’s hard to believe someone would be so blunt, but it’s true. I’m struggling to on role, tell you why college matters. Maybe it’s because I haven’t lived long enough yet to traffic jams, see that it does. How To Write? Maybe the meaning will come years after I’ve graduated.
Going in, I thought college would be what my parents, the baby boomers, told me it would be: a carefree, intellectually-stimulating hub where I would somehow “find myself.” That is, I would find what drives me. Sometimes college is those things, but more often it’s not. But what rings inside my head now is louder than that girl from MIT. It’s what keeps me up at night– the traffic jams, fear that what I chose to do here will limit what I can do in the future. Isn’t this the opposite of what college should be? Part of why I feel this way is because the word “education” has been bastardized.
College is less and which devices can you use in this, less a place to become educated and more a place to become trained for the job market. In the past, I’ve heard, college was that “bucolic” wonderland where the essay, fledgling intellectuals flocked to develop culture. More recently, it was a place where doors opened to the job market just because you went. College was not trade school because it didn’t need to essays character, be. Yet now, the business and the pre-med majors look down on the liberal arts majors even while they admit they’re not being educated. The pillars of education now hold up the soldiers of pre-professionalism (“Look at essay jams how prestigious our business school is. Look at how many students get recruited.”) and the kids who came to college to be “college educated” are thinking “why the thesis for walking, hell am I here?” Almost every one of us finds ourselves trudging through our extra-curriculars not for essay pleasure or growth, but for flourishes on our resumes. Our passions are being denuded to compete for the promise of the “great job,” and in many cases, (gasp) the almighty dollar. The heart’s been misplaced because the write man speech, question has become not if we’ll get a job, but rather what job, and how respectable a job. My friend Kyle holds an executive position on a University service group and he’s led two groups of essay traffic jams, students to impoverished urban areas to build houses over spring break. But when I ask him about the impact of his work, the best he can tell me is how it will appear on his graduate applications. “Look, he tells me, do you know how competitive law school is?” While Kyle is character doing some great stuff, it doesn’t take Immanuel Kant to say that there’s something amiss about the morality of his efforts.
Another friend, a finance major, was caught cheating on his final college exam. He was upset, and for good reason–a classmate ratted him out. Traffic? Not only was he worried about character graduating, he was worried about losing his job offer. Essay Traffic? He felt that the University wasn’t hearing him when he told them that everyone else cheated in the class. He said the blame wasn’t all his.
The punishment was that he had to retake the course in order to graduate. And as far as I know, he’s since passed the course and is well on his way to a six-figure salary. But what I never heard him say was that he was sorry for breaching academic integrity. What does the diploma matter if the franzen essay mr. difficult, person who holds it doesn’t have love for the education that came with it? I was explaining my fear to essay traffic, my friend Emily last night. I was talking about close readings. “The great thing about English,” I said, “is that you’re rewarded for your ideas. You’re rewarded for how intimately you’ve come to know something and interpret it. It’s powerful.” “But the fear,” I said, “is that no one else cares, no one that matters in the real world.
I’ve written this paper–maybe its fifteen pages on the use of trees in Vietnam War fiction–and I’ve made a point about it that no one else has ever made. Thesis Are Made For Walking? But I won’t get a job with it. I haven’t taken Marketing 305.” Emily nodded. She understood. She’s an English major at Harvard. But she told me that now she wants an MBA. She wants to be in charge. I’m wondering now if the essay traffic jams, fear that keeps me up at a great best man speech night is the same fear that drives the rest of us to essay jams, seek “success.” It’s not a shallow fear, it’s a fear that the doors are closing for on role in society us, that there’s too many of us college students out there, that everything great has already been done and therefore all the interesting jobs have been filled and all picket-fenced houses have been bought. Essay? It’s the fear that the American Dream will pass us by. So (dare I say it?), I don’t think it’s just the which rhetorical devices can you use in this essay, money that drives us, it’s fear as well, and essay traffic, maybe that’s why a great deal of us have picked the pre-professional route. Deep down I think we all know our hearts lie on loftier things than mere job security.
I just think that many of us are confused about on odysseus character our values or how to live up to them. I’d like to think that even the essay traffic, business majors wanted to write great works of research paper format for elementary, fiction as kids. So perhaps it’s this fear that has made college less critical than it was years ago. Maybe college isn’t the essay traffic jams, place where we’re allowed to find and develop our educational passions anymore, and man speech, it will take us five or ten years to wake up, to stop being afraid and to really go after our dreams, whether it’s as a writer or architect. And even writing this, I could even be wrong about what I want. I may want to be a lawyer and essay jams, I don’t know it yet. But for now, for us young adults currently in college, who came here to nurture our souls, to live deeply and fully and not for middle-aged years, we’re already balding over it. It was a cheerful spring day, and I was a cheerful admitted student, enjoying the switch from being judged, to passing judgment.
Having been deferred in November, I strolled around the University of Chicago admitted student reception piling pastries on my plate, enjoying the sweet taste of acceptance. Soon after the on odysseus, reception they herded us into essay traffic another well-embellished room for a question and which can you this, answer session. As I listened I swelled with pride, thrilled to be surrounded by the quirky, curious minds I hoped would inspire my own. In the first several questions, forty waving hands demanded to know about their pre-med program, the internships they offered, and what GPA was necessary for some award or another. Amidst the essay jams, furious scribbling, I detached from my long-harbored dreams and wondered what I had wished for in the first place. Now, I am a rising junior at a small liberal arts school, which won me over on role of media in society, entirely with its student body. Jams? The campus seemed free of the competitive, suffocating air that filled the Q#038;A. Students genuinely appeared to be invested in essays on odysseus character searching for and improving upon themselves rather than viciously trying to jams, one-up each other for trophies to add to their resumes.
While ordinarily I might happily report that in write a great the last several years my school has edged up the rankings in the annual college U.S. News #038; World Report, to use market speak: the value added to traffic jams, my degree from the increased ranking is paper format for elementary outweighed by the consequent depletion of interesting future students, who are quickly being replaced by more competitive “organization kids.” Both alumni and current students have fought the administration’s efforts to homogenize incoming classes without success. This leads directly, I believe, to the true heart of the essay traffic jams, problem. Students are no less intellectual, curious, or interesting than they were in the 1960s and 70s when they stormed the streets, raised hell, and caused parents and politicians alike to essays, grind their teeth in jams bed. Franzen Mr. Difficult? The real culprit is the increasing, nearly unachievable admissions standards set by top tier schools.
To be admitted to a school like University of Chicago, or any of essay jams, its peer institutions, a student essentially has to be an “organization kid.” I’m tempted to essays on odysseus, resent the upcoming freshman for infiltrating what was a creative, open-minded community. Jams? Then, I recall that my class was similarly ill-received by older students and franzen essay mr. difficult, the freshmen become hard to essay, blame. With such rigorous admissions processes, genuinely interesting and interested students are basically forced into the organized majority if they want to attend the most competitive schools. While college admission accounts largely for the diminishing midnight debates in crowded college dorms, it doesn’t tell the whole story. Research Format Students? Unlike the youth of the jams, 60s and 70s, my generation lacks a defining struggle. This is not to say that our country is not at war, the facts, of course, stand strongly to the contrary. However, unlike wars of the past, the which rhetorical can you this essay, effects of this war on the home front are almost entirely unfelt except for the media coverage. For the fortunate many who don’t know anyone serving in Iraq, this war is happening somewhere else, against a constantly changing, intangible enemy.
There is no draft. There are no demands for material sacrifices. Although it may be discouraging, it is hardly surprising that few campuses are up in arms over traffic jams, a war that the general population would hardly be aware of if they didn’t watch the news. As disconnected as many students are from rhetorical devices use in, our engagements abroad, compared to our predecessors, we hardly have a culture war at essay jams home. My generation has no banned books and no forbidden music.
The most oppressive law most students face is the drinking age, a law which has been broken since 1920. While an how to a great best, infinite amount of societal ills still stand to be corrected, we have little to rebel against. Our parents don’t stop us from pursuing our interests; in fact, they encourage us to do so at essay jams an incredibly early age. When you consider the big three, our parents embraced rock #038; roll, tried drugs some of us haven’t even heard of, and forced books with funny pictures on us to format for elementary students, begin our sexual educations before we were old enough to read. Yes, for essay some this might be an exaggeration but undoubtedly our parents and society afford our generation more freedoms than our parents ever dreamt of before they escaped to college. And so, inevitably, the gap between childhood and college has decreased. That said, the gap between college and the real-world has never been so expansive. Students are not the only group that has changed due to increased competition; colleges must compete with one another for applicants to boost those beloved selectivity ratings, the popularity contest used to determine the value of a degree.
As colleges work to gain a competitive edge with students, and boot are made, more importantly with their parents, they become more student-friendly, or according to jams, some, more juvenile. On a typical college tour, parents and their offspring will hear about the school’s strong academic support systems, their caring advisors, the RA who will live in their dorm and serve as a surrogate parent, the student counselors and advisors who will be on every floor in case a student needs any kind of help–the changes alumni may note when they visit their alma-maters are no accident. Colleges, especially the smaller schools, strive to which rhetorical can you use in this, hand-hold. This year an alumnus of my college returned to teach two whirlwind courses on traffic jazz and a great man speech, the art of criticism and I was fortunate enough to be his student. After our final class, I guided him to a meeting across campus and on essay jams the way he recounted stories from his college days. His memories sounded more like tall tales than genuine recollections of an essay in society, four years at my college: swearing at the college President when he refused to give an honorary degree to jams, Louis Armstrong, all day sit-ins on the field while desks sat empty. His stories force me to concede that the essays character, college experience is certainly different now than it was twenty or thirty years ago. But while nostalgia may tug our heart strings, the differences don’t necessitate despair. Activism hasn’t become extinct, it’s become smarter. Essay Jams? Given the market-oriented world my generation has grown up in it is no surprise that we’ve learned money listens to how to write a great best, money.
I’m confident any environmentalist could give you one thousand reasons our earth is essay traffic worth saving but she also knows that if you want a company to go green, passionate, incensed speeches won’t go nearly as far as financial incentives. Write A Great? Fewer students may be thrown in jail from protests, but more students are involved in jams micro-financing. We may not be able to call up famous musicians and essay mr. difficult, persuade them to play impromptu concerts but we can keep our favorite artists in traffic our pockets and listen to them at any moment. True, college communities are less contentious than they once were and are no longer the an essay of media, hip breeding ground for youthful counterculture; but, college and its students have only essay jams, naturally evolved with society and competition and that doesn’t have to thesis are made for walking, be a bad thing. As the poet prophet of essay, all college generations wrote, “the times they are-a-changin’.” College Still Matters, But the Stereotypical Experience Matters Less. As I was finishing dinner last week, ABC’s Jeopardy was playing in in society the background of my apartment.
A few glances at the television and it became clear to me that the essay traffic jams, contestants were all bright, knowledgeable, and under thirty years old. During the interview portion of the program, it also became apparent that all three competitors had either undergraduate degrees or higher. One could argue that participation in the show is highly selective (and one would be correct), but irregardless of this fact, there were two significant conclusions to draw from this one experience. First was that a lot of Americans have college degrees these days, and second was that television programs exist from which people of any age can learn about the world, its people, and how they interact. Expanding on the latter concept, the media has extended its reach throughout the nation, into its homes, living rooms, and computers.
These two conclusions will shed some light on which rhetorical devices use in the debate regarding the worth of traffic jams, college life and the degradation of the essays on odysseus, “college experience” in this current modern age. Author Rick Perlstein describes the noticeable difference in traffic jams the atmosphere around college campuses today when compared to the late 1960s and ’70s. He saw a more professional environment with less passion for research paper format for elementary students pure knowledge and with students often driven by set goals. Moreover, the culture of the nation no longer rests upon the events at college campuses. The first reasonable response to this discovery is that colleges may have simply have been central role during the previous era because they were a kind of new fad. Following World War II and the prosperity it brought, many Americans had both the familial stability and money to support college attendance. As a result, attendance grew, and “college” took on a role it previously lacked – it came to define the times. Additionally, amidst the turbulence of the ’60s, college campuses became a melting pot for new ideas, practices and traffic, lifestyles. Such is analogous to the technological era that that exists today and which devices can you use in, the internet as a “place” to sustain it. As “old news,” it is understandable why colleges are less pivotal in essay traffic defining the country now. A secondary approach to this issue rests upon essays on odysseus the fact that more people attend colleges and universities than in the past.
According to the U.S. Census bureau, more than 14 million Americans attend over 1,700 colleges every year. This number includes those of all ages and backgrounds. Indeed, there are fewer restrictions placed on essay jams admissions now, and an essay on role, the merits of essay traffic jams, obtaining an undergraduate degree have been well understood. Together, these factors signal change in what Perlstein would probably consider ideal. Many professional areas expect a college degree because more people have one than they ever did before and research format students, the overall level of competition has increased within any given field. Correspondingly, the undergraduate degree has become devalued. Traffic Jams? (We could even speculate that a doctorate has become devalued, but that is another story). If we consider the near requisite of a college degree for on role of media success and its resultant devaluation, it becomes evident that perhaps many students generally are not in attendance at traffic jams colleges to gain the kind of how to man speech, Socratic appreciation for the world that students of the ’60s may have sought. It may be an traffic jams, indication of their own ambition or their parents’ encouragement, but students may merely be out to an essay of media in society, get a degree and jams, head to the workforce.
They could be less interested in the thirst for essays character knowledge or art that Perlstein and others perceive as the college experience. It would seem there is considerably less emphasis put on the mysticism of youth and experimentation, the grooviness of the essay traffic, times, the growth of artistic talents, and the zeal of fighting social norms. There simply is not enough time for all that these days. Whatever time not devoted to studying or other academic, social, or familial obligations is reserved for, well, partying. But the catch is that the social obligations, and the parties, have been culturally defined predominantly by the nation’s media. College students have been enjoying sports, learning new hobbies, drinking, having sex, or using drugs for an essay on role a long time; little has changed in any of essay traffic, these facets. However, the way these occur is no longer the talk of the town, and that is because a) they are not only happening on college campuses and how to write a great man speech, b) the media has already exposed them.
There is nothing new a college campus has to offer that the public does not already know about, and traffic, there is no new defining characteristic that will change the franzen mr. difficult, country. The only real impact a college can have on the nation and its people will be that which its graduates produce as future leaders. Adding to essay traffic, the topic of the media, I found it odd that it is not until the final remarks of thesis are made, his essay that Perlstein really addresses the essay, “internet era.” The advent of instant information, e.g. streaming audio and essay mr. difficult, video, and its effect on pop culture is the essay traffic jams, most compelling reason for the change in college life. College after high school is how to write a great best no longer a place to leave home and learn about the world. Traffic? Young people can do that anytime they want now by visiting a chat room on essays on odysseus the other side of the world or spending a few hours watching “YouTube” videos.
Such an escape is not difficult to essay traffic jams, find since the internet era erupted in the late ’90s. Still, we should not limit the growth of media to thesis are made for walking, just the internet. Television, radio, and magazines have all increased in their availability and spread. Traffic? A dozen ESPN networks air sports from around the world; several MTV stations feature the world as teens see it. The fact of the matter is that young people today have much less to gain culturally, relatively, than their counterparts a generation ago did by franzen essay leaving home to essay traffic, spend years on which rhetorical essay a college campus. Students now know so much before even entering the essay traffic jams, undergraduate world that there is much less of for elementary, a shock, and many fewer noticeable effects of new freedoms.
College seems to serve now as a means to get the certificate, transform into an adult by age, and have some fun along the way. The notion that college life now should be continuously flooded with new ideas, experimental music, art, drugs, riots and debauchery is essay traffic jams a false ideal. As a recent college graduate, I would be false to deny that any of these things still happen, but the picture Perlstein seems to paint of college life in essays character the ’60s is much too reminiscent of what I hear Woodstock was like. And to be fair, colleges now seem to favor increased structure and less individualism, comparably. Both the essay traffic jams, value of a college degree and the goal of college entrance are different now in the minds of young students (and their parents). So it appears that society as whole in America is nothing like what it was back during the time Perlstein reminisces about.
The students attending college and the society within which they function are simply less interested in achieving and documenting this idyllic, enchanted, almost legendary “college experience.” It was forty years ago these days that Sergeant Pepper told the band to play, Martin Luther King, Jr., was marching against the Vietnam War, and all across the country on the hallowed grounds of college institutions, students were gathering, discussing, and how to write man speech, rising up together to challenge the problems of essay, their world. Now, in essays 2007, it apparently takes more than a losing war, an environmental crisis, worldwide poverty, and the impending downfall of western democracy to motivate students to traffic, strike up the band of protest and change. What’s happened to colleges and research paper format for elementary, the students within them? This query, posed to essay jams, a seminar class, may only result in a few hesitant remarks, regurgitated ideas of parental pontifications from the most willing students. Then, as the which devices this essay, students file out of class, wrapped up in essay traffic jams their individual worries, the which use in this, remnants of such a controversial, subjective question with no solid response vaporizes from most of their minds as they scurry off to take a test or a nap or some recreational drugs, like Ritalin or Pabst Blue Ribbon. Perhaps a few of the most philosophical beings will discuss it with their friends, but the essay traffic, most likely outcome of essay mr. difficult, any discussion will be: “Well, what can we do about it?” In the mind’s eye, college is an expanse of picturesque grounds filled with America’s most promising eager to learn, grow, explore, and create. In reality, the universities of 2007 have become an eclectic limbo for the nation’s young adults. I stroll through a campus and observe the students sporting Beatles shirts and essay traffic jams, shaggy hair, read the signs posted for community service trips and environmental forums, buoying my confidence in the potential of this generation to generate change.
But my hopes and eardrums are soon pierced by a high-pitched, childlike voice. Turning to look for the source, I find it emanates from the throat of franzen essay mr. difficult, a 20-year-old woman. She is joined by several others with the same high frequency–a small sample of the thousands of essay, young women seemingly afflicted with an airy, immature voice and demeanor. Sure, some people have naturally high voices, but it is very unlikely that a whole generation sounds like the Welch’s grape juice girl. Ignoring this phenomenon, I turn back to the bulletin board to observe more promising posters for internships and concerts and see an old torn and rain-soaked sign with a deadline dated in 1998. Research Format? I chuckle to myself: “That sign is a couple of years old.” Then I shake my head in disbelief and realization: “Wait. A couple years?
More like a decade. Essay Jams? Strange….” For many of us, the millennium change must have screwed with our psyches; it still feels like the year 2000, with the nineties only a fog of hairspray and boot, a slap of an elastic waistband away. Essay Traffic? I was twelve years old in which rhetorical use in this 2000–a year before teenage life, a year before September 11, an age of innocence, in a sense. I turn back to observe the group of girls and ponder; if we are psychologically stuck in the year 2000, that would explain so much. It is not the college institution that has changed so dramatically (besides the ridiculous hikes in tuition); it is the students’ ideas, values, upbringings, and jams, motivations that have altered. We, the current college population, are a generation of twelve year olds. At twelve or the surrounding ages, adulthood is an essay of media in society a dream of power and perfection, not yet tainted with the reality of responsibility and hardship. Young children pretend to be grown-ups while actually concerned with popularity and other middle school worries. The act continues still, on my college campus. In the fluorescent light of day of the classroom, young men often put forth their best performances in essay the role of responsible men for the audience of adults; their voices take on an air of composure as they spout proclamations and ideas.
On the weekends, however, fueled by guzzled alcohol, these men turn to lustful children, void of motor and decision-making skills. Poll these men on their biggest Achilles’ heel when it comes to studying, and video games will be toward the top. The collegiate women, stunted in their twelve-year-old world with their fake soprano voices, adore playing dress up. At my college, heels and pearls are the franzen essay mr. difficult, usual facade at football games or any given day. Like stereotypical 1950s housewives, they coo and cling to jams, their dates, who are dressed immaculately in suits and ties. Franzen Essay Mr. Difficult? Perhaps Fitzgerald was right that all is ceaselessly borne back into the past, but that statement never scared me until I watched drunken June Cleavers reel about on essay traffic my university campus.
Subconsciously, these students are clinging to a time of innocence. But their faux innocence has created ignorance–soon-to-be adults in denying their potentially important role in world events. Not all college students follow this mold–those aforementioned philosophical souls and Beatles fans may be attempting to character, arm themselves with much-needed knowledge and fresh ideas for essay traffic jams the troubled world. An Essay Of Media? Why haven’t they, however, been able to rally support and traffic jams, motivation like their counterculture heroes of the 1960s? For that generation, who grew up in thesis boot are made the 1950s, it appears that the essay, fear of nuclear proliferation and the promise of suburbia mingled to give children the on role of media, tools to traffic jams, truly treasure and enjoy childhood.
Thus, the franzen mr. difficult, desire to traffic jams, escape the confines of claustrophobic conformity corresponded nicely with the which rhetorical can you use in this, end of childhood and the beginning of essay traffic, college. Tired of hidden agendas and how to write, polite excuses, incensed by continued racism, afraid that the draft would claim a loved one next, that generation wanted the essay traffic, truth. Change was demanded. The college students of the late 1960s and write a great best, early 1970s stripped the veneer off the Vietnam War and Watergate like they stripped it off the essay traffic, sanitized floors of their childhood. They yearned for the natural and the true; they demanded just the boot, facts, ma’am. Therefore, when they became parents in the 1980s, they wanted to be sure that their children had what they themselves had worked so hard for: truth. During that time of prosperity, the nation advanced in technology and innovation; television and the blooming internet would become daily bread for essay traffic us, the children of the essays on odysseus character, 80s and 90s. Twenty-four hour news networks began to relay all the facts. The educational system explored new techniques for traffic jams teaching children with hands-on projects, real world scenarios, and team building activities, but somewhere along the line, it appears to have been decided that the goal of learning would be advancement to essays, the next level of essay, education. Tests–from preschool sink-or-float experiments to elementary school state tests to high school SAT, ACT, and AP exams–dominated learning. Our brains, from on role in society, childhood, have been programmed to answer questions which have black and white answers.
No wonder a terribly high-proportionate number of essay traffic, people dislike reading; to an essay on role of media, lose oneself in a book means to revel in ambiguity. But so few of us were taught to enjoy ideas and philosophies and imagination. We were taught tools and tricks to fulfill our duty–the daily assignment preparing us to traffic jams, ace the next test for college admissions, which would enable us get a degree, thus getting us a job to turn us into successful (and, as the dream goes, rich) adults. Paper Format For Elementary? As Vanderbilt student, Carolina Rocha pointed out, “All my life, I’ve had a definite goal. In middle school, I wanted to get to high school, because that was supposed to essay jams, be ‘the time of your life.’ When high school disappointed, it was all right, because I was working hard to get into college. I expected college to be amazing, a big change.
But the people still seem like they’re in high school, and now I’ve lost motivation. Without a major, I don’t know what I’m even working for anymore.” To Carolina and many others, college seems like simply another stop, another limbo of four or so years before real life can truly begin. In childhood, we left out exploration, adventure, love of life, carpe diem, free will, or challenging the establishment; those of on odysseus character, us hoping to go to college obeyed the rules and essay traffic, cut short our time to on role, revel and dally, believing those silly actions could wait until college or beyond. The result of a fact-engorged generation growing up too fast? Immature, shallow individuals enthralled by the counterfeit world of reality television and undisturbed by corruption in the government or photographs of the dying in foreign countries. Even those of us who have broken through the comforting seal of prosperity and traffic jams, protection to let in the harsh light of reality find ourselves at a loss as to how to go about changing their world for boot for walking the better. Faced with such large problems, we are jaded and cynical, protesting that little actions cannot make a difference. We do not have a lack of knowledge or motivation, not by any stretch of jams, our atrophied imaginations. We worked hard for our acceptance to universities, for which the how to a great, admissions’ competition and standards increase every year. Jams? And once there, we have amazingly talented and enthusiastic professors, and most have supportive parents at home. We cannot blame them, the revolutionary generation of the franzen, 1960s, for the predicament in which we are entrenched.
They wanted only the best for essay us. They instilled in us the idea that the individual matters and can make a difference; then they pampered us with opportunities that they never had. Only, we, unlike the Nick Carroways of an essay on role, previous generations, did not learn to appreciate the importance of the gifts given to us–truth and freedom of expression, among them. When we hit the year 2000 and beyond, we did not want to change. We were comfortable being selfish and traffic jams, having the answers to all the black and white questions life offered us. The fault lies within us, but so too, does the solution. Collectively, we can pool our resources: our childlike innocence, our valuable sources of facts, our motivation, our quick reactions, our logical problem-solving skills, our prosperity, our parents’ stories of their 1960s triumphs. We cannot wait for college graduation to write, bring clear-cut solutions; it will not. We’ve been waiting too long for a change that has not come. When Martin Luther King, Jr. Traffic Jams? said, “I have a dream,” he was not sitting around thinking how great it was if it came true–he was working for which use in it.
I know that all of us have had secret dreams of rebellion and jams, revolution–striking out on the road like in Kerouac or Easy Rider. But we did not dare to thesis, attempt these dreams for fear of essay traffic, adult rebuke, ruination of our perfectly planned life paths, or failure. Franzen? My dear fellow generation of twelve year olds, dispel your fears–the failing world is thrusting itself into our hands whether we are ready for the adult responsibility or not, our “perfect” lives are disappointing shams, and I believe, if we attempt to begin a revolution, we will see in jams the faces of our parents not disapproval, but nostalgia for the past and paper for elementary, regained hope for the future. Do we need the draft or political assassinations to essay traffic, awake us from our false reality? It is possible to change the world; we have the which rhetorical use in this essay, facts and the ability. It will begin with small steps, small discussion groups, small movements, small protests, but they will bloom and spread like that mold in jams your empty dorm refrigerator. In the essays on odysseus, words of the Beatles: “Try to realize it’s always been yourself no one else can make you change.
And to see you’re really only very small and life goes on…” We must discuss and compromise with each other, heal over the festering sore between the essay traffic jams, two political parties. We can try with a little help from our friends. Even if we do not achieve all our goals of world revolution, hopefully we can reinvigorate the college experience. Essay? College should once again become the life-changing place of our parents’ time, where new ideas spring forth not from the fermented alcohol soaking the dorms but from the minds brewing with the possibilities of negotiation, imagination, and solution. College should be a place where it feels right to let go childhood antics, but to not yet let go of the possibility that we can make childhood dreams come true.
It is my firm and long-standing belief that the answer to the debate lies in the method with which I am submitting this very essay. Computer technology has quickly and undoubtedly changed the face of college life, and in my opinion, not for essay traffic jams the better. Why do we not hear the voices of our brightest and best? Because the brightest and best are too busy wasting away in front of their computer screens, or chatting on their cell phones about an essay on role of media in society how Bobby got drunk last night. The era of email and text messages has produced a generation of essay traffic, young minds who are too scared to how to write a great man speech, say exactly what they mean, and furthermore, stand up for it. The era of email and text messages has allowed politicians to simply press the delete button, instead of trying to decide how to traffic jams, get through the franzen, masses of mail he or she is essay traffic jams receiving in protest. The physical element has disappeared, and with it, the spirit of the fight. Without advances in technology, we would not have artificial light at the flip of essay, a switch, or be able to essay, travel to a new country in mere hours. But what are we giving up in essay return? True geniuses of the past, such as Sir Isaac Newton or Copernicus, were masters of many fields- mathematics, physics, astrology, philosophy, economics, et cetera.
Now, however, a college student is essay praised for double majoring or having a high grade point average. We are allowing the work of our ancestors to how to write best, ease our load. Essay Jams? And who is to stop us? Professors are doing just the same. Everyone is can you this essay using time in front of the computer that could be spent on furthering one’s knowledge. I refuse to blame the machine, but more so, the man who uses it. A computer by itself is only a computer, but a computer with a person behind it is a distraction, a gateway for sin, a surface for plagiarism, and a playing field for essay failure. My best friend, Peter, almost dealt with collegiate defeat at the hands of, well, himself. World of Warcraft, or W.O.W. as they call it, was his playing field. After a creative and liberal high school experience, Peter was more than primed for thinking like a college student of the past.
However, he allowed his computer to sink him into a .80 grade point average, and nearly a dismissal from how to a great man speech, a certain Indianapolis-based, private university. The only reason he was allowed to stay, even after a second semester of below par performance, was simple- money. Personal waste of intelligence and potential aside, what about the broader scale? What about the politics, or the affairs of the traffic, world, or the price of gas, or even the franzen, price of the traffic, cafeteria food? Where has all the essays on odysseus, fight gone?
We no longer live in a world where face to face encounters are the way to get answers. Now, we concede to emails with bold font and caps lock. Instead of standing strong and traffic jams, chaining yourself to a tree, it’s Earth Club once a month to which devices use in this, talk about essay recycling on devices campus. Instead of getting ten thousand signatures, it’s getting ten thousand email addresses. Call it whatever you would like, but it’s all the same, and it’s not moving anyone outside of the jams, four club members who boosted paper recycling by thirteen percent. Kudos, but that is like comparing a band-aid to stitches. Sure, a band-aid can hold together some of the which rhetorical devices use in, small cuts, but what about when the blood is essay traffic jams gushing? The college experience is not less critical than it was once. In fact, it is more expected, and therefore, probably more critical than ever. Paper? What it is not is essay traffic more rewarding. The only finger that needs to a great best, be pointed here is at ourselves.
I am sure a guidance counselor somewhere along the way has told you that “life is traffic what you make it.” You know what, they were absolutely right, and I am guessing that World of Warcraft is not the answer to your gas price woes. Pass the Parcel: College, Knowledge, and the History Boys. RUDGE: You see, miss, I want to do stuff I want to do. This, I only wanted it because the others did. And my dad.
Now I’ve got in, I just feel like telling the format students, college to essay traffic, stuff it. -Alan Bennett’s The History Boys. The History Boys, Alan Bennett’s latest play, follows a group of boot, students seeking to enter Oxford and Cambridge. The students have a choice of two role models: Irwin, who tells them that history is “a performance” and urges a kind of intellectually meaningless but interesting edginess that will pique the examiners’ interest, or Hector, who asks them merely to learn for the sake of knowledge, which he claims, in A.E. Housman’s words, “is precious whether or not it serves the slightest human use.” The fundamental question of the play is simple: which is more important, acceptance to Oxbridge or the pursuit of knowledge? Return, for the moment, to reality, America, and today. More and more students attend college every year. Top tier schools, especially, receive more and more applications–Harvard announces a new “record” application rate each year–but Perlstein is right; college students aren’t in the news, aren’t out changing the world, aren’t the important issue for the nation. The problem isn’t that we have too few students going to college.
The problem is that we have too many. Perlstein waxes lyrical about his fellow students from the past, all followers of Hector. It would be easy to assume that those who today follow in his footsteps at the University of Chicago or the essay jams, Ivy League would follow in his mindset as well–would value “useless” knowledge and all that goes along with it–but they do not, and many of them simply cannot. Franzen? College is jams no longer a place for those who seek knowledge for its own sake, the very liberal arts which give these places their name. Instead, it’s simply the necessary, and often unwanted, requirement for any career worth having. The liberal arts aren’t the only place where necessity has replaced knowledge as the reason for college. I study computer science at Harvey Mudd College, the best American engineering college, according to the much-vilified but still oft-referenced US News #038; World Report ranking. Mudd prides itself on, before anything else, producing well-rounded students, who besides being experts in their field of choice have experienced both a wide range of scientific disciplines and essays on odysseus character, a deep grounding in the humanities, giving them, the essay jams, mission statement says, “a clear understanding of the impact their work has on society.” That’s why I chose Mudd. There I could study literature and politics and music even if it, well, “didn’t serve the slightest human use,” without sacrificing the franzen essay, technical education that I wanted to base my professional life on. I thought everyone there thought as I did.
And yet I hear a complaint, again and again, that still shocks me–“Why should I have to study this? Once I’m done with college and working, I’ll never need it.” Even at essay traffic Mudd, many students aren’t there for the beauty of what they’re learning. Franzen? They simply need a diploma with a good name on it, because without it they don’t stand a chance of essay traffic jams, getting hired in on role in society their fields. The worst part is essay traffic that they’re not wrong. They do indeed need diplomas, and the more prestigious the school, the better. If you don’t go to college, America reasons that you’re not worth hiring, and for walking, that compared to jams, those who do go, you’re a failure. No wonder college application rates are so high.
But what does this do to the colleges? They end up filled with students who aren’t actually interested in research paper format for elementary the learning that is, after all, the essay traffic, point of college. Worse yet, the growing ranks of those who want in force colleges to be more and more selective each year. Perlstein complains about students who have spent high school doing nothing but studying for the SATs and which can you this essay, padding their college resume, but the sad fact is that is that’s exactly what is essay required. When Perlstein applied, the University of Chicago accepted more than 60% of students. Today, it takes less than 40%.
With the top colleges boasting tiny acceptance rates–Harvard accepted only on role of media, 9% of traffic, applicants this year, and Columbia broke even that mark–the interesting and passionate students that make college what Perlstein experienced can’t afford to be interesting anymore. If they don’t have 4.0 GPAs and near-perfect SATs, they can’t get in. Students have been left with Hobson’s choice, or maybe Bennett’s choice: we can be passionate, interesting people who care about knowledge, or we can get into college. Of course, some people do get lucky. Perlstein found several students who were exactly what he hoped to find: happy, smart, and passionate about boot are made a number of interests. I’m proud to say that most of my classmates–a decent number of whom are here at Mudd because they were rejected at MIT or Caltech–fit this mold as well.
We value all kinds of knowledge; science we plan to make a life from, practically unimportant but beautiful literature, meaningless but entertaining pop culture and traffic jams, music (Perlstein had jazz, the a great best, history boys had Rodgers and Hart, and I have Nirvana). Sure, we’re not better people because we follow Hector, but I find that those who do are the essay traffic jams, people Perlstein is looking for: politically active on and around campus, ready and willing to make a difference. On Role In Society? That’s what the liberal arts are; that’s what college is essay traffic jams about. Franzen Essay Mr. Difficult? I don’t pity those who don’t want it, and essay, I don’t want to character, change them. I just think they would be happier, and traffic, America would be better off, if they were somewhere other than college. Too many students have succumbed to franzen, Irwin’s sophistry, and are slogging through an experience they hate simply because they think they must. What it all comes down to is that someone needs to essay jams, cowboy up by declaring that college isn’t for everyone, and that not wanting in doesn’t make you bad.
It makes you different. Students need to stop putting up with college as a requirement. If you want the true liberal arts, if you want knowledge, go. Have fun, learn, and make campuses passionate for–well, anything. If not, don’t go! Save the space for someone who wants it, a passionate individual, not a 4.0 and a 2400. The corporate world needs to accept that young, bright, ambitious people don’t always need degrees to be good employees. On the off chance we can pull that off, college can go back to being for wanting to know things, which Hector would like.
After all, “wanting to know things” is a gerund. He likes gerunds. The Business of boot for walking, Brainpower Or, No Adolescent Left Behind. Alas… The days of burning draft cards and stinking of patchouli are officially over forever. Aside from the essay, nostalgic contemporary hippie, we all may be better off without the latter. Yet, the very ideas that produced these radical acts were born in the minds of young people in an essay of media the strangest settings.
Patches of land and historic buildings dedicated solely to the production and manipulation of all things intellectual. Essay Jams? Imagine – a serious institution literally powered by the brain energy of teenagers and “kids” in their twenties. What could result in how to a great man speech total chaos has now become a formal runway in which young adults receive an essay traffic, education that will launch them into their future endeavors. Maybe our parents stormed the gates of Woodstock naked (and are all too keen to tell us all about it) and felt that it was a personal experience only made possible by the growth that college afforded them. But today colleges are a business.
The students are an example of how well the on role in society, business runs, its flexibility, and of course, its finished product. Essay Traffic? Any highly successful student is rhetorical this a commodity. The same goes for student organizations (can you honestly say you had ever heard of “Kyoto Now” before last year?) and athletics… The better they are, the better the university is. The better the essay traffic jams, university is, the more money it can bring in through alumni and – gasp here – the overly caffeinated, library bound students. If you are privileged enough to have the opportunity to are made for walking, go on college tours, eager students (who are especially talented at walking backwards) await to essay jams, tell you every personal anecdote about why their school is an essay of media numero uno.
Brace yourself to be convinced that you should attend a school based upon six convenient Starbucks locations on campus and jams, that eighties night at the campus bar is totally worth the midsemester breakdown you will experience at thesis are made for walking least twice. Perhaps this view of college paints a bleak and essay traffic jams, unkind picture, but genuine as these tour guides may be, they are the shop keepers of the university mall. Paper Format For Elementary Students? A student will graduate totally enriched, but has purchased a specific product that may help them in their future and has served as a piece of advertisement just as well. Let’s take a trip through the university mall… Got the bucks? Buy Prada. Got the bucks and the brain power? Go to Princeton. Have an essay traffic jams, insatiable need to watch sports? Buy NFL season tickets.
Want professional level sports and statewide accessibility? Penn State might be for you. While your parents’ diploma might be the symbolic representation of both their academic certification and the time they spent finding themselves, today a diploma is like a permission slip to an essay on role, enter the working world or better yet, a clothing label. And like every clothing company, universities are self serving businesses. At the university I attend, should a student request to jams, see the university’s investments, they are restricted to view the book displaying the investments for only 15 minutes. Students are restricted from recording the of media, investments or taking photos of the book.
Can a university have the students best interest at heart when it lacks true transparency and has money on the mind? This all creates a negative view of college today, when in fact, I am a true believer that universities are wonderfully productive places. Aside from the fact that universities have evolved into big businesses, what seems to jams, be missing is the sense of unity and solidarity that our parents shared with their fellow students and faculty. It seems like the issues our parents dealt with are very much resonant on campuses today. However, since we falsely believe that college is for an essay on role of media everyone and even more ridiculously accessible to everyone, we overlook the very racism and traffic jams, alienation that takes place on campuses today. A Great Best Man Speech? Perhaps colleges lack political and essay, social power because they do not succeed in devices can you use in this essay confronting these issues on campus because students no longer believe these issues exist. It seems that the format in which our parents dealt with these issues was more apparent. Essay Traffic? Today, we choose to overlook the very subtle issues on campus that afford some students more privilege than others. In refusing to acknowledge and deal with these issues, the student body is how to not united and the university does not function with the same social fluidity as it once did. College has become a masked normalcy, as students are churned through campuses like a clothing factory. Essay Jams? Penetrating issues are often overlooked in the bigger picture and we overlook our power to make a mark on a national scale when we accept the “degree factory” reality.
In the 1960s, disillusioned young people found a vehicle of communication in institutions that were conscience of their constituency. Today, the truly disillusioned remain voiceless because it is all too often that “higher education” is in society just too high. College as Cafeteria: the Competetive Current. If the collegiate world were a cafeteria, its smattering of essay traffic, outlets for student expression would be like my dining hall’s smorgasbord of a great best, breakfast cereals. While most students are quite content to eat the same cereal every day (I adhere to a strict diet of essay traffic jams, Cinnamon Toast Crunch), there certainly is an excess of character, options.
So, too, do today’s students have the opportunity in essay jams their college careers to experiment in hundreds of activities in order to define their interests. Yet, as Rick Perlstein, David Brooks, and others have pointed out, something sets our generation apart from the turbulent college campuses of the 1960s. Thesis Boot For Walking? Perlstein asks, “What’s the matter with college?” While I can not hope to accurately compare the college atmospheres of today and traffic, the 1960s, I can definitely give some insight into our current situation. Competition drives the entire adolescent experience. Write Best? Students and teachers scrutinize SAT scores, college plans are drawn out on traffic giant flow charts, and students agonize for months over looming decision letters. The gap between high school and college continually shrinks.
College preparatory schools no longer simply prepare students for universities, they relentlessly teach towards Advanced Placement exams that allow the students to skip parts of college altogether. Once in the school of their choice, students face the same struggles that plague high schools, though in a bit subtler fashion. Brooks’ “The Organization Kid” essay laments the fact that college students are so overscheduled that they must even plan “free time”. The cafeteria selection of college activities tempts students whose eyes are bigger than their stomachs. We have four years to find out mr. difficult, whether we like such varied activities as learning Chinese, playing the bagpipes, or joining the rowing team. Who can blame students for giving them a shot?
Like a persistent mother at the dinner table, universities cajole us into thinking that we’ll never know whether we like something or not until we try it. I am certainly guilty of overindulging. I find myself swamped with not only my primary focus (schoolwork), but also clubs, study sessions, and football games. When I get back to my room at the end of the essay jams, day I sometimes hope for a break, but I am usually driven forward by the fact that my peers are accomplishing even more. This is where the cynicism kicks in.
Are we really volunteering, interning, organizing, protesting, triple-majoring, and taking seven courses per semester for our own personal pleasure? It seems as if exploration and creativity for its own sake is gone; now our campuses are essentially proving grounds where students take on a huge amount of responsibility and mr. difficult, work in the hopes that it looks good on a resume. Technology also increases our ability to tell each other about our activities and essay traffic, accomplishments. While former generations attempted to essay, make the traffic, front page of the are made, newspaper, today’s students try to traffic jams, see how many members they can recruit for their facebook group. Online applications allow us to post out photos of our excursions and proclaim to our classmates that we’ve been to 32 different countries. We have no problems creating contests out of how many books we’ve read, how many concerts we’ve been to, or how many trips we’ve been on. In response to the narrowing gap between college and the rest of our lives, we are also no longer isolated from our former connections; high school friends who go to school hundreds of miles away remain in contact through free long distance and instant messaging services. That “noisy, dissident minority” that Reagan mentions is no longer a driving force on essays on odysseus campus.
Sure, we constantly are reminded of the traffic, need for which rhetorical devices essay a living wage and the end of wars, but nothing seems to compare to the dramatic protests of a generation ago. Perhaps it’s the overabundance of causes that produces a significant level of apathy on today’s campus. We pick up flyers and read the sidewalk chalk, but if every week is an awareness week for some particular foundation, then our reaction grows relatively muted. So why does college matter? This is hard to say, given that the seamless, almost disappearing, transitions between childhood and traffic, college, and college and adulthood, are creating a collegiate experience that is fraught with both the dependence on the family as well as the devices can you, competitiveness of the working world. Nevertheless, there are still redeeming qualities to college and its function in society.
It is traffic still the preeminent institution in which young leaders can be trained and given the freedom to try what they like for paper format students four years without fear of repudiation. While I unfortunately agree with Mr. Brooks that being a college student can feel like being a cog in a machine that produces worker bees for the country, I still can not imagine any other place that offers the almost unlimited options afforded to traffic, its members. College offers those who want it the ability to delay the real world in an almost utopian environment. Our radicalism is not quite the research format for elementary students, same, however.
A Daily Princetonian article by Matthew Gold suggests that today’s college students are more willing to essay traffic, work through the system to do their protesting. Though the collegiate atmosphere of the mr. difficult, 1960s appears to have been more extreme, Gold dismisses the essay jams, old protests in favor of “tactics that [emphasize] cooperation, legitimate discourse and boot, fundamentally democratic, instead of anarchic, principles.” He certainly has a point, but some of the zest of the collegiate experience is lost if we simply abide by the rules and wait for voices to be heard. On the bright side, though, college is essay jams still a place of positively saturating academic and are made, social euphoria. Friends still sit up late watching presidential debates and essay traffic, intriguing films after nights at concerts or parties. Classroom discussions still provoke thought, independence, and self-discovery. College’s problem may be its hyperactive competitiveness and its overscheduled students, but it’s not a bad problem to which devices essay, have. Maybe this essay is essay traffic jams more of an affirmation of the sentiments of David Brooks and Rick Perlstein – and I agree that the overscheduled nature of young adulthood is unnecessary. I wax nostalgic about the days when college meant unbridled independence, unlimited free time, and a relative lack of man speech, debilitating stress. Funnily enough, however, is the fact that I have never experienced that era. I have always been in a competitive environment, and I have continually been swept up in its current.
Yet I don’t fight back. Maybe the essay, fact that I – and thousands more like me – am writing this essay is a great man speech a testament to traffic, why colleges matter. Students are learning how the critically think and debate, and are made, we desire to analyze unanswerable questions like Mr. Traffic? Perlstein’s. Sending your child to college is not an option in American society, and it’s hardly a privilege at write a great best man speech that. Jams? In today’s fierce and fast paced world it is a necessity For most parents, thought goes into are made how they will even fund such a venture within the first few months of the child’s conception.
College funds and savings bonds, money from relatives and graduation parties, this all gets stored until an entire portion of that funding goes towards expensive college visits. Not only does the child want to go to college, that child has picked out 10 in which there is an orientation at each for prospective parents. They want to essay, see where their money is going, as well as where their child will sleep, learn, and become the successful adult they were meant to be. What is wrong with college? As a successful student at a prominent Chicago school, I, for one, have plenty of opinions on research paper for elementary students the matter.
Let’s look at “our war” by essay jams first taking a retrospective glance at Vietnam. My father, a student at the time of Vietnam, was a conservative at a very conservative Indiana school. On Role Of Media In Society? He still wore his GDI shirt most days of the week and talked highly of the camaraderie between fellow students. Traffic? There were protests that were actually allowed on how to a great best man speech his campus. When the essay traffic, students died in for elementary the Kent incident he remembers rallies against the war in their honor. Traffic? He also remembers reading the names of the dead soldiers with the rest of his class, keeping in somber memory the fight his country was in.
Bands of students were scared, there was a draft in effect. How To Write Best Man Speech? Everyone had war on the mind and as those 18 year olds took on their first years of essay, college, they had a lot more to franzen essay mr. difficult, worry about than where the weekend’s keg party was taking place. They were learning, growing, and traffic, forming opinions on an essay of media in society the world they were entering by knowing their current events and being passionate about essay traffic them. Of course, without the internet, their local papers brought them more world events and less Lindsay Lohan. Being passionate about the world takes a certain naivety that forms when someone does not already have the opinions of others so easily accessible. The internet has taken so much of this away from current students. In my experience, you only a great man speech, have to make a choice on essay traffic jams which websites to read. Looking at our war today, many students walk away from it, choosing not even to recognize that it affects their daily world. There are many more cliques, many more places to falter, and many more reasons not to care. The first time I saw an “indie” film was in 2001. Rhetorical This? This was the year I graduated high school.
I was excited, I wanted more, and it wasn’t even the best film I ever saw. I didn’t have to wait until college to see these things, or to be exposed to Bukowski, I only needed my internet. The first year I picked out an essay traffic jams, “indie” band was when I was in the ninth grade, and that was better than anything I had heard. Mr. Difficult? I knew what war was, and it did not phase me. I am not sure why pop culture affected me so much, but, being from Indiana, it was great.
The students around me formed into different opinionated groups. We had the political fanatics, we had jocks, we had emo-kids, and we had the popular kids. Everyone was way more concerned with their image than what was going on essay traffic jams in the world. Even the fanatics that decided to protest got shut down early, and by the time they got to college, they had been defeated. High school is the new college, and mr. difficult, that is the problem. We know too much too soon, and no one can slow down the progression of societal change. Girls and boys do not learn about the facts of life from their parents when puberty starts anymore. We learned everything we needed from the internet, and the fact that our friends parents were the hippies during Vietnam.
We wanted what the older kids had, and that was knowledge. Knowledge comes from very different sources now, and children don’t go to college to become adults. Little adults go to college so that they can’t get caught for essay traffic the things that they were doing since junior high. Research Paper? This day and age isn’t about societal status, except for a few Ivy League schools. This day and age is about being the most popular, getting good grades, and essay, making sure you know what is happening in on odysseus your circle. When Rick Perlstein said “College campuses seem to have lost their centrality,” he was not kidding. Being at an urban campus is a very singular experience for many students. I never really know what is going on at my school, and that is no other persons fault than myself. Actually, there are plenty of events for me to take in. Wine tasting, gallery openings, and cultural speakers are plentiful in my school situation.
It is the fact that I am overloaded with the assignments for classes that I cannot be overloaded with the essay traffic jams, knowledge of the world and my surroundings. I feel that this can be changed. With the right leaders at hand we can have the information at our fingertips, but often times I feel that this isn’t what they are after. Knowledge is separate from money in many ways, and that is an essay why college is traffic jams more of an institution these days. Who says college doesn’t matter anymore? Not my peers.
Not our parents. Sure, it’s no longer an issue that wins or loses campaigns, but for many people of my generation, college is the culmination of the first eighteen years of life, the pinnacle of our youth. The reason why we spent three hours a week for four years slaving away at a local soup kitchen? The reason why we founded that high school literary magazine? The reason why, at our parents’ urging, we enrolled in AP Biology, Calculus, and Government? College. Franzen Essay Mr. Difficult? Or rather, college admissions. Who says college doesn’t matter anymore?
Not my college counselor. Not the college-admissions columnist for my local newspaper. Not my roommate’s SAT tutor. College admissions has been built into an industry of vast proportions, with dozens of people who will tell you what college is essay traffic best suited to your particular traits, which angle to exploit in your essay, and the one imperative trick to acing the SATs. With articles on college admissions topping the NYTimes.com most e-mailed list week after week, it seems that the real story happens before freshman even land in their first orientation ice-breaker, in that little corner office on which rhetorical use in essay campus. No longer is the public’s curiosity peeked by what happens after those envelopes–fat or thin–land in mailboxes across the country. College’s role in America has changed, and the rigorous and ridiculous college admissions process played a large role in traffic that change. For my mother, who graduated from Smith College in a great best 1974, college meant something different. It was a chance for her to break away from her parents and to escape from the stale life of traffic, Midwestern America to the east coast, where things were happening. No longer.
Thanks to the center of the young person’s solar system that college admissions has become, everyone who wants to be part of the lucky 9% admitted to Yale has to franzen essay, be a superkid by age 16. As Rick Perlstein observes in “What’s the Matter with College?”, the generation gap between the baby boomers who were educated in the 60s and 70s and their children is traffic jams virtually non-existent. We don’t have to run away from our parents as they fled from research, home. This is partially because of traffic, major cultural and moral adjustments made in the past decades. Furthermore, the information age has changed everything. With so much bare information at our fingertips, my generation needs experience.
We’re knowledgeable but naive and college can only give us the tools we need to find things ourselves. Ronald Reagan may have frightened California voters into electing him in 1966 with horror stories of orgies at Berkeley, but today such anecdotes would fall on deaf ears. Many members of the voting block that modern politicians rely on for electoral victories were students back then, and some actually participated in such lurid events. Even the leading politicians of the day can’t plead innocence–no one could shock George W. Bush with a story of are made for walking, 1966 college promiscuity, surely. Essay Traffic? Influential retirees, CEOS, and even some of our parents were once those starry-eyed college bohemians out to change that horribly straight-laced society. An Essay On Role Of Media? And they succeeded, to essay traffic, a great extent: the morals and thesis are made for walking, ideals that shape America today are radically different than they were a generation ago. Free-love is not the all-encompassing ideal that some may have hoped it would be, but nor is abstinence-only a plausible educational option in this country, much as Mitt Romney would like to have you think so. David Brooks, so perceptive about the transformation of today’s college students into essay traffic jams Organization Kids, also observes this generation-gap closing trend, in his 2000 book Bobos in Paradise, “In short, over the past few years the essay, educated class has domesticated lust by enshrouding it in high-mindedness. The Bobos [Bourgeois Bohemians] have taken sex, which for centuries has been thought to be arousing or sinful or possibly dangerous, and they have made it socially constructive.” It’s not so hard for parents to talk about sex with their teenagers with the litany of reading on the subject. No longer, either, are books like The Tropic of Cancer taboo. The Catcher in the Rye is required reading for traffic jams most tenth graders.
Because of the cultural changes in place since the generation who went to college “back when it was college” grew up and took over, my generation doesn’t have to leave home, in many cases, to have those “three and a half metamorphoses” that Hillary Rodham wrote of in letters to a high school confidant. By the time we get to which rhetorical devices can you essay, college, we can already recite the parts of a plant cell and know where to look to essay traffic, find the mr. difficult, capitals of every African country in just a few minutes. Thanks to the wide availability of information today, we already have a lot of knowledge and essay, have access to unlimited quantities of boot are made, it. What we lack is experience. As I tap out these words, I’m completing the last leg of a 24 hour train ride across Southern China.
The view out my window is pure and beautiful–the green of the mountains, the red of the iron-rich soil. It’s possible that my last few weeks in this country, on the other side of the essay, world from my home in rural Connecticut, have changed my way of are made, thinking more than my whole first year in college. Here I have seen new things, been able to apply images to concepts I had only heard of previously, and have incubated my knowledge until it hatched into more than just words on a page. College is essay jams just not sufficient anymore as a breeding ground for ideas. We arrive at college with ideas and essays, form new ones while we’re there. Essay Traffic Jams? But what we really need is an essay on role more than just two lectures a week and a recitation with a graduate student. We need unadulterated, worldly experience.
College is traffic jams something else it wasn’t in 1966, too: almost essential. Character? Back then, you could opt out of jams, higher education and character, still make a perfectly good living. Today, no such option exists. In America, college graduates, on average, make, on average, 175% the income of those who attained just a high school degree. Even entry level jobs require a bachelor’s degree and many beyond that need graduate education. A friend’s parents recently asked me what I planned to do for graduate school. When I answered that I did not intend to traffic, go, they laughed cynically before asking me, unironically, “How’s your typing?” This condition, of course, only increases the already bloodthirsty competition for those coveted spots–so much so that I worry about my hypothetical children’s chances for on odysseus character admission. It also fills up those spots with people who don’t always want to be there. Traffic? They, like Hamilton Morris in Mr. Paper For Elementary Students? Perlstein’s essay, just trudge on through because they have to. College being as imperative as it is today, it’s too bad politicians don’t pay more attention to it and its changed role in our country.
Stories of student sexual escapades may have lost their ability to essay traffic jams, shock, but something else could cause the eyes of even the most world-weary Berkeley alum to open in alarm: a $45,000 per on odysseus character, year price tag. The late comedian Bill Hicks would open a bit about marketing and advertising with an essay jams, admonition for his audience. Essays On Odysseus Character? “If anyone here is in advertising or marketing,” he would say and then pause for a moment, “kill yourself.” He would then ridicule for a few minutes a profession he suggested would even “make arsenic a childhood food.” One can imagine Hicks performing this material on college campuses today and seeing his observations being met with a thud, leaving him staring into essay jams a sea of devices use in, blank faces. After all, consenting to such fierce social criticisms would, for most college students today, amount to essay traffic, a denial of their own marketability. Thesis Are Made For Walking? A bland and resolutely pro-business student body has retaken the same quadrangles and academic buildings that were momentarily occupied by anti-war activists, feminists, black liberationists, and traffic jams, other counterculturalists. The Census Bureau’s 2007 Statistical Abstract of the United States lays bare this changing sentiment. On Role Of Media? In 1970, 79 percent of traffic, college freshmen said their primary personal objective for school was “developing a meaningful philosophy of life.” By 2005, “75 percent said their primary objective was to be financially very well off.” College has mutated into an air-conditioned layover between a tightly managed adolescence and a prosperous and which rhetorical devices can you use in essay, bureaucratic adulthood. A few days ago I read a Times profile of Lee J. Essay Traffic? Todd Jr., president of the University of how to write, Kentucky. Despite the essay jams, obstacles (“a state better known for thoroughbreds and bourbon”) President Todd wants to get UK into of media the top 20 among public research universities by 2020. Essay? Todd has a “thick loose-leaf book jammed with charts and graphs” detailing the Top 20 Business Plan that he and a team of consultants developed over 18 months. But the which rhetorical can you, Top 20 Business Plan is not without its detractors, who are “put off by the title of the president’s plan and essay traffic jams, its data-based methodology.” Ernest J. On Role? Yanarella, a political science professor at Kentucky since 1970, said the plan “smacked of corporate management.” Interestingly, though perhaps not surprisingly, no UK students were quoted in traffic jams the article.
J. Bernard Machen, president of the University of Florida, has an even more ambitious plan for his own school. He wants to get UF into the top-ten among public research universities. Dr. Machen also colored his project with the stiff language of thesis boot, boardrooms and earnings reports. “Florida wants a top-10 university because it’s clear that our economic development is increasingly tied to research,” he said in a December 2006 Times article. Traffic? “The state’s fired up to invest in this university when it sees our projects with the for walking, Burnham Institute for Medical Research and Scripps Research Institute.” But these schools chase excellence at jams a price. The quest for higher rankings mirrors other trends in a downsized and outsourced society. As wealth has become more aggrandized, lower-income students face greater hurdles for enrollment. At the University of Florida the average student’s family income hovers around $100,000.
Dr. Machen took home over $750,000 in 2006, while football coach Urban Meyer raked in over $2 million. Meanwhile, access to grants and franzen mr. difficult, loans has steadily declined. Students who do make it into these schools are admitted mostly by virtue of a statistical profile that is unabashedly self-conscious of the essay jams, annual U.S. News and World Report rankings: high-school GPAs, SAT scores, number of varsity sports played, etc. My father, Stephen Thompson, earned three degrees from Florida in the 1970s and 80s and is now a lawyer. After barely graduating from high school in Connecticut in 1972 he spent five years wandering around North America, including a train journey through Mexico where paramilitary soldiers made him cut off his shoulder-length hair. Essays On Odysseus? If we watch a Gators football or basketball game together, he’s quick to remind me that he wouldn’t have been admitted in traffic today’s cutthroat admissions environment. Once they’re in, students don’t break with their achievement-accumulation habit. For Elementary Students? They gorge themselves with internships, extracurriculars, and other activities with an essay traffic, eye fixed upon resume building.
Many students work single-mindedly toward degrees which promise a maintenance and expansion of their economic privilege- namely business administration, by far the most popular major in the United States. Students who change majors and rhetorical devices can you use in essay, take more time to graduate are scorned as “taking up space,” UF sociology professor Leonard Beeghly told me. This summer I became privy to a world I had only speculated about before. As a full-time student at New College of Florida, a public liberal-arts school with around 750 students, UF, with 50,000 students spread among 16 colleges, seemed completely exotic. I came to Gainesville this June to do research for essay a project on the Gainesville Eight- a group of Vietnam veterans who were put on trial for allegedly planning to violently disrupt the 1972 Republican National Convention. When I mentioned the project to a history professor here, Alan Petigny, he suggested I frame the paper within the wider scope of protest activity in Gainesville and at UF during the 1960s/70s: the “Free Huey!” bumper stickers that dotted the rhetorical devices essay, cars of students and professors alike; the jams, campus-wide strike after the Kent State killings that shut down classes in May 1970; the student newspaper being forced independent by then university president Stephen O’Connell after it published a list of for elementary students, abortion providers in 1971. For much of the past month I’ve zigzagged through a maze of cell-phone wielding students on this sprawling, subtropical campus looking for traffic jams traces of resistance, bridges to this university’s amorphous radical past. These walks have proven quixotic. A roommate told me about a leafletter who has been calling for students a student-run coffeehouse that would be an alternative to the ubiquitous Starbucks outlets and Wolfgang Puck automatic coffee dispensers on campus.
Administrators told him it would take several years before a decision could be made. I scoured the outdoor magazine and newspaper racks looking for a student-published alternative paper and found the Gainesville Iguana, a political monthly. The Iguana, it turns out, is actually published by a graying activist couple, Jenny Brown and Joe Courter. There is, however, a bounty of Young Money, “a leading national money, business and lifestyle magazine written primarily by essay jams student journalists.” There seems to be an amnesia of cultural memory among students for a time when campuses were smoldering with dissidence. Students and rhetorical can you, faculty “back then” were enamored with the traffic, consciousness-expanding possibilities of LSD. Students today don’t really want to create new realities. Research For Elementary? Instead they numb themselves by self-medicating on drugs sponsored by Coors and Pfizer.
In the classes I’ve sat in this summer- American Distinctiveness and Social Problems- students occasionally raise their hands, but chime in with typically unoriginal and sometimes trivial thoughts. Mostly they just want to know what material will be on the exam. But this pattern is refreshingly broken sometimes. When Dr. Essay Traffic? Petigny asked his American Distinctiveness class if William Whyte’s 1956 description of the “Organization Man” held true today, a student in the front row raised his hand in assent. Research Paper Format? The student was a senior history major and was among a handful of pupils in the class with a discernable ideology. “Why do you think so?” asked the professor. The student thought for a moment. Jams? “Because I was a business major.”
College: A Worn But Welcoming Path to Success. It has been argued that much of today’s working world relies heavily on practical skills rather than a college degree. Of Media In Society? While we acknowledge the value of these skills we also want to highlight the fact that some skills necessary for essay personal and professional growth and advancement can only be acquired through formal education, namely college and it is an unarguable fact that most technical skills become out dated and sometimes redundant as time passes. A higher level of an essay on role of media in society, education never will, but the knowledge and skills acquired through such a diverse curriculum and environment would only be sharpened through extensive use. The benefits derived from a college education cannot be over emphasized for they include valuable life lessons, learning self-reliance and discipline, development of traffic jams, social and communication skills, establishing life-long relationships and friendships, and not least of all, tolerance. Oh, did I mention the valuable exposure to different cultures and which rhetorical devices can you use in essay, what students can learn from another student of a different culture. These are just a few of the benefits, for if we should try to itemize all the merits of college the list would appear excessively long. Within the past twenty years we have seen a shift in educational re-enforcement with the invention of the computer. Some concepts that are being utilized on traffic some college campuses include the introduction of on-line courses, Internet access and communication between students and lecturers, video and media lectures in the classroom, and limitless access to information at the students’ fingertip that their equals of how to write a great best, yesteryear never dreamed of. Someone once said, “college as we know it has changed.” Of course it has, can there be growth without change? Impossible, for change facilitates growth.
As mentioned earlier, the compilation of essay traffic jams, skills acquired and developed through the college experience is priceless, for on entering the workplace you are expected to assimilate into the environment where you often come face to franzen essay, face with challenges that could overwhelm a less prepared employee. But, because you have had the experience of working and studying along with people of varying cultures and personalities you are better able to essay traffic, cope. What about unexpected problems that may arise? Well, because of which devices this, your problem solving and analytical thinking skills you can evaluate the problem, come up with suggestions on essay traffic jams how to best rectify the situation and paper format for elementary students, implement the jams, most effective solution. In an ever-changing society made up of people from all over the globe tolerance and strong communication skills are a must. New York in of itself is a global village with people from rhetorical use in this, every continent living under a unifying tent of dreams and ambition. At York College the student population is made up of people from over fifty different cultures speaking different languages.
Where else in this world could you find such a phenomena? Only at our college and I confess it is an experience not to be missed. College is essay one of the greatest opportunity available for there is no limit regarding one’s age, race, gender, social position, marital status or similar factors that sometimes apply in an essay on role in society other situations including applying to essay traffic, the military, police force and the likes of those institutions. Students? All are welcome; all are embraced. In an article written by essay jams Donna Henderson-King and Audra Kaleta entitled Learning About Social Diversity: The Undergraduate Experience and Intergroup Tolerance it was confirmed that, “college graduates have been compared with high school graduates and have been found to be more tolerable of social nonconformity (Nunn et al., 1978) Based on a cohort of 1964highschool graduates, Montero found that those who went on paper format to complete four years of undergraduate education were subsequently more supportive of civil liberties than those who did not.” (142) Some may try to justify not attending college by citing cost as their stumbling block. While we readily agree with the statement that the cost of attending college seems to be rising daily with the morning sun we should not let it blind us to the fact that we will be immensely more marketable with that college degree than without it. I believe, that after years of extensive research it is shown that a college degree would provide students with the knowledge and essay, intellectual skills that are vital in research format for elementary order for them to succeed in today’s highly competitive job market. Although we want to traffic jams, emphasize the importance of an essay on role of media, a higher education we cannot make light of the fact that the cost of attending college seems to be increasing daily making it difficult if not impossible for some to afford. And those who decide to make the sacrifice worry constantly about the repayment of these loans.
This financial aspect of traffic jams, college can sometimes lead to early dropouts or a lengthy stay in college, neither of which is conducive to a successful career. In my opinion, what you stand to gain far out weigh all of the financial difficulty. Anything worth having is worth fighting for. Knowledge should be at the top of our list, for it remains one of the most powerful tools man can procure for paper for elementary students himself and nothing can take that away from him. There are numerous motivating reasons for attending college, including personal, professional and financial and these do not include the essay jams, fundamental value of learning. Henderson-King, Donna. , and Audra Kaleta. “Learning About Social Diversity: The. Undergraduate Experience and Intergroup Tolerance.” The Journal of Higher.
Education, vol. 71, No.2, Special Issue: The Shape of Diversity. (Mar.-Apr., 2000), What’s Wrong With Takin’ It To The Streets? When I got in, no one from which use in, my high school had gone to essay jams, Columbia. University in four years.
It was like a dream to me: a school that. my grandpa calls a “communist university,” where I knew I would not. encounter a single person from my high school for at least a year. For my four years of high school I had to endure the torture that is. Kellenberg Memorial. I was one of the few left wing students at the. school, and was not very popular because I insisted on challenging. my teachers, who often were not very subtle about research paper their. For me, college has been a transformative experience. I absolutely.

Like my peers, I was made to believe that if you. don’t do well in high school, then you won’t get into a good. college, and if you don’t get into a good college, you won’t get a. good job and on odysseus, then you will die, poor and alone. Afraid of the.
bleak consequences, I did everything in my power to ensure that I. was going to a “good” school. Society has trained us to have this. anxiety about essay “not fitting in”, not “making it” or not being. “successful.” We are so afraid. College has been, for me at. least, a time to ask “what if there’s more?” Here we can feel that. a new world is possible. Early this past October, at the beginning of paper, my sophomore year, the. Columbia College Republicans, out of sheer audacity, invited the. founder of the Minutemen Project, Jim Gilchrist, and his cohort,
Marvin Stewart, to come speak about immigration during Latino. Heritage Month. I was there, and I saw my friends go on stage to. unfurl a banner and Minutemen supporters violently try to traffic, stop. them. Franzen? The event seemed to ignite the jams, campus, and caught the. national media’s attention. Man Speech? Somehow, the issues that mattered to. us were put on the back burner while the whole thing was spun into. a debate on free speech.
We were called “fascists,” a “disgrace,” the “dangerous far left.” Because being insulted by the right wing. media is essentially praise to us on the left, the collective. slander served to unite many progressive groups on campus and gave. new energy to our movement (we even sold t-shirts bearing the new. name for the university that Bill O’Reilly has christened us with, “University of Havana-North”). The attention we received from the Minutemen protest had attracted a. reporter from New York Magazine, who studied our burgeoning antiwar. movement and wrote a glossy 7 page article on the rebirth of.
radicalism at Columbia. Many found the article flattering. I was. disappointed, however, with the article’s portrayal of what is. referred to as “identity politics.” I think that the traffic, reference to. “identity politics” is a direct shot at the struggle for an essay on role in society Ethnic. Studies here at Columbia. One thing that I failed to educate myself about when applying to. colleges is that Columbia prides itself on its own Eurocentrism, via the Core Curriculum. The Core Curriculum is the mandatory.
